Straight
Mutes |
|
|
 |
>Denis
Wick All Aluminum Straight Mute*
- This is a great standard aluminum straight mute with a
fine sound and good intonation. Highly recommended.
Approximately $50.00US. |
|
 |
>Bach All Aluminum Straight Mute.
This mute has sound and intonation properties similar to
the Denis Wick. Approximately $55.00US. |
|
 |
>Tom
Crown All-Aluminum Straight Mute.
This is a good quality straight mute that has a bit
brighter and more metallic sound than the Bach or Wick.
Approximately $50.00US. |
|
 |
>Humes
& Berg Stone-Lined Straight Mute.
This is one of the worst straight mutes I've ever used or
heard. In years past, it was the most common mute used by young students in
elementary or middle school bands, mostly because of its
cheap price. That has, thankfully, changed in recent
times. NOT recommended. Approximately $15.00US. |
|
 |
>Yamaha
All Aluminum Straight Mute.
This is a fine quality mute from Yamaha that has tonal
characteristics similar to that of the Denis Wick or Bach.
Recommended. Approximately $50. |

Cup Mutes |
|
|
 |
>Denis
Wick Adjustable Cup Mute.*
I think this is the best cup mute available today. With
the adjustable cup, you can get a variety of good sounds
with great intonation. Highly recommended. Approximately $55.00US. |
|
 |
>Humes
& Berg Stone-Lined Cup Mute.
This mute has, for the most part, become the industry
standard cup mute. Most players own one even if it's not
their favorite. I have three myself; don't ask. Even
though it's not my favorite cup mute, I recommend it for
all players because it's become standard, they sound good,
and they're not expensive. Recommended. Approximately
$30.00US. |
|
 |
>Jo-Ral
Tri-tone All Aluminum Cup Mute.
This is a fine cup mute that tends to have a bit of a
metallic sound...because it's made of metal I guess. Some
players really like this mute; I'm not one of them.
Approximately $70.00US. |

"Harmon"
Mutes |
|
|
 |
>Harmon
"Wow-Wow" Mute.* If there's an industry standard in
Harmon mutes, this is it. Like the name Kleenex, "Harmon"
has become the standard industry term for any "bubble",
"wow-wow", or "buzz-wow" mute. This is a great mute that
every trumpet player should own. Approximately $40.00US. |
|
 |
>Jo-Ral
All-Copper Bubble Mute.
This is a great sounding bubble mute that really sizzles
even at quieter dynamics. Great for small group jazz
settings. It doesn't blend well with other Harmon mutes so
it's best for solo situations. And, it's heavy.
Approximately $70.00US. |
|
 |
>Jo-Ral
All-Aluminum Bubble Mute*
This is another great mute from Jo-Ral. The all
aluminum construction makes for a better blend with the
standard Harmon mute and it's lighter weight makes for
greater comfort. Highly Recommended. Approximately $65.00US. |
|
Bucket Mutes
(AKA Velvet Mutes) |
|
|
 |
>Humes
& Berg Stone-Lined Bucket Mute.
Like the stone-lined cup, this mute has over time become
"the" bucket mute. It has a pretty good sound and is
relatively inexpensive. Approximately $25.00US. |
|
 |
>Jo-Ral
All Aluminum Bucket Mute*
This is my favorite bucket mute and I recommend it for all
players. Even though it doesn't blend well with the more
ubiquitous "stone-lined" from Humes and Berg, its got a
much better sound and is easier to handle. Approximately $70.00US. |
|
Clear-Tone
Mute(s) |
|
|
No Picture
Available |
>Humes
& Berg Stone-Lined Clear-tone mute.
This is the only "clear-tone" mute that I'm aware of and
is pretty much the industry standard for this rarely used
mute. I've only had occasion to use it once, myself. |

Practice
Mutes |
|
 |
>Peacemaker
Practice Mute*-
This unusual looking contraption is a good practice aid
for environments hostile to the glorious
sound of the trumpet. If you need to practice
quietly, this is your salvation. While I don't think it's
quite as good as the Yamaha Silent Brass (see my
technology reviews), the Peacemaker's
user-friendly price tag more than makes up for the modest
difference. Recommended. Approximately $35.00 US |
